Xperi Applauds FCC Approval of All-Digital AM

Authorization of voluntary move to All-Digital AM Radio heralds a new generation of radio listening for the digital age

San Jose, Calif.—November 5th, 2020 – Xperi Holding Corporation (NASDAQ: XPER) (“Xperi”), owner of HD Radio and DTS Connected Radio brands, released a statement today on the recent FCC authorization of All-Digital AM Radio.

“We thank the FCC for expeditiously approving commercial All-Digital AM Broadcasting,” said Jeff Jury, GM Automotive at Xperi. “This broadcast-led initiative heralds a new generation of radio listening for the digital age. With more than 4,500 AM radio stations in the United States, we anticipate a growing number of digital-only stations in the future.

“We believe this authorization benefits both broadcasters and listeners and, to that end, Xperi is working closely with the broadcast community to support new station launches. Because existing HD Radio technology is future-proof, it will enable both legacy analog stations, existing analog/digital simulcast stations and any new all-digital stations going forward.

“The pandemic has reinforced the importance of radio as a means of communicating with, and alerting, the public about health and safety issues. All-Digital AM will further support this.

“We look forward to working with the auto industry in further rolling out digital radio technology in vehicles and are currently engaging in digital testing for both electric and ICE vehicles so that the cars of the future receive digital and analog stations through HD Radio technology.

The FCC Report and Order allows AM radio stations to operate using all-digital broadcast signals offering AM listeners significantly improved audio quality and more reliable coverage over a wider listenable area than analog or hybrid digital broadcasts. It also allows broadcasters to provide additional services to the public, such as song title and artist information.
